How we Help
Why Choose Mayfair Health?
- Physiotherapist-led — every assessment is carried out by a experienced physiotherapist with expertise in running biomechanics — not a coach or personal trainer
- Integrated with your wider care — running assessments are joined up with our physiotherapy, VALD performance testing and Pilates services, so any findings translate directly into targeted treatment and training
- Comprehensive assessment — we look beyond your gait to examine strength, mobility, stability and injury history — because how you run is always the product of how your whole body moves
- Suitable for all levels — from first-time 5km runners to competitive marathoners and ultra-distance athletes — we work with runners at every level and every stage
What Your Assessment Includes
Every running assessment at Mayfair Health is a comprehensive, one-to-one session covering:
- Discussion of injury history and current or previous running-related complaints
- Review of current training load, frequency and running goals
- Video treadmill or over-ground gait analysis — recorded and reviewed in real time
- Strength assessment of key running muscles
- Joint range of motion assessment
- Functional stability assessment
- Exercise prescription to address identified weaknesses or imbalances
- Running cues, tips and drills to improve technique
- Training plan advice and load management guidance
- Written report of assessment findings and recommendations
Who Is a Running Assessment For?
Runners Managing Injury
If you are currently injured or returning from injury, a running assessment identifies the biomechanical factors that may have contributed to your problem — and helps ensure you return to running in a way that reduces the risk of recurrence. At Mayfair Health, we understand how important running is to your lifestyle and, wherever possible, we keep you running throughout your rehabilitation rather than stopping altogether.
Runners Looking to Improve Performance
Even small improvements in running economy — the efficiency with which you use energy at a given pace — can have a significant impact on performance. A running assessment identifies inefficiencies in your gait and builds a targeted programme to address them, helping you run faster, further and with less effort.
Runners Looking to Reduce Injury Risk
Recurring injuries, persistent tightness or a sense that something in your running has never quite felt right are all strong indicators that a formal assessment would be beneficial. Understanding your biomechanics before an injury becomes established is always preferable to managing one after it has occurred.
The Running Injury Package
For runners managing a current injury, we offer a dedicated Running Injury Package — combining a full running assessment with six physiotherapy sessions. This gives us the time and structure to not only assess your gait but to deliver a comprehensive rehabilitation programme, reintroduce running at an appropriate pace and build the resilience needed for a confident, sustainable return to full training.
How to Prepare for Your Assessment
What to Wear
- Clothing you can run in — shorts or leggings are ideal to allow accurate visual analysis
- A slim-fitting top is recommended
- The running shoes you most typically train in
What to Bring
- Your activity tracking device if you use one — Garmin, Apple Watch, etc.
- Your training plan or log if you have one
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a gait analysis at a running shop?
Running shop gait analysis is typically a brief treadmill video used to guide footwear selection. A physiotherapist-led running assessment goes significantly further — examining strength, joint range, stability and movement control alongside gait, within the context of your full injury history and training goals. The outcome is a clinical assessment and personalised programme, not a shoe recommendation.
Do I need to be injured to have an assessment?
No. Many patients are injury-free and simply want to run more efficiently or reduce future injury risk. Understanding your biomechanics before problems arise is always the most effective approach to staying injury-free.
Can I keep running during my rehabilitation?
In most cases, yes. We take a keep-you-running approach wherever clinically appropriate, providing a structured run programme to guide you through rehabilitation alongside your treatment.
Do you work with run coaches or other practitioners?
Yes. We are happy to liaise with your run coach, club physiotherapist, GP or orthopaedic consultant. If you do not already have a team around you and would benefit from a referral, we can advise on appropriate specialists within our network.
