How we Help
Understanding Sciatica
Sciatica describes pain that originates in the lower back or buttock and travels down the leg, following the path of the sciatic nerve. It is typically caused by compression or irritation of the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve, most commonly as a result of a disc herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or degenerative changes in the lumbar spine.
Symptoms vary widely from a dull, persistent ache to sharp, burning, or electric pain radiating down the leg. Numbness, tingling, and weakness in the leg or foot are also common. Sciatica can be severely limiting, affecting sleep, work, walking, and daily function.
How We Can Help
Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective sciatica treatment. Our physiotherapists and osteopath conduct a thorough clinical assessment to identify the precise source and nature of nerve irritation, distinguishing true sciatica from referred pain, and determining the most appropriate treatment pathway for your specific presentation.
Treatment may include spinal manual therapy, neural mobilisation techniques, targeted exercise rehabilitation, postural correction, and activity modification guidance. Where imaging or specialist referral is clinically indicated, we will coordinate this directly on your behalf.
We regularly see patients who have been managing sciatica for months or years without resolution and are experienced in achieving meaningful progress where previous treatment has not delivered lasting relief.
What to Expect
We recommend starting with a comprehensive 60 minute assessment. You will receive a clear diagnosis, an honest discussion of contributing factors, and a structured treatment plan with realistic timelines and clear milestones throughout your recovery.
No GP referral required. Available across all clinics.
