What to Expect
What Happens at Your Appointment
We know that booking a new healthcare appointment can feel daunting. Here is exactly what to expect when you come to Mayfair Health.
Your Initial Assessment
Your first appointment is a comprehensive 30-, 45- or 60-minute consultation. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your condition to understand not just the injury itself, but how it is affecting your life, your work and your goals. A thorough physical assessment follows, examining posture, movement, strength, and function to build a complete clinical picture.
Your Diagnosis & Treatment Plan
By the end of your first session, you will have a clear diagnosis and a transparent, structured plan for your recovery. You will also receive expert guidance on what is happening and what we are going to do about it.
Hands-On Treatment
Depending on your condition, treatment may include:
- Manual therapy and joint mobilisation
- Soft tissue release and massage
- Dry needling / acupuncture
- Movement and postural correction
- Tailored exercise prescription
- Education and self-management strategies
Follow-Up Sessions
Follow-up appointments are structured around your progress. Your physiotherapist will adapt your programme as you improve, ensuring every session moves you meaningfully forward.
Why Choose Mayfair Health?
Accurate diagnosis from the outset
Spinal pain is frequently misunderstood and mistreated. Our detailed assessment process is designed to identify the true source of your symptoms, so treatment is targeted from day one rather than based on assumption.
Experience with Complex and Unresolved Cases
Not all injuries are straightforward, and not all previous treatment gets it right. Our physiotherapists have extensive experience managing complex musculoskeletal conditions and regularly see patients who have been through treatment elsewhere without the results they were hoping for.
Coordinated care when you need it most
Where your condition requires input beyond physiotherapy and osteopathy, such as spinal consultant review, imaging or injection therapy. We manage that referral pathway directly, so you are never left navigating the system alone.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist at Mayfair Health?
No. You can book directly with us without a GP referral. As a private clinic we welcome self-referrals and aim to offer new patient appointments quickly. If onward referral is clinically needed, we will manage that on your behalf.
How long is a physiotherapy appointment at Mayfair Health?
We recommend having a longer, 60-minute consultation, giving your physiotherapist time to take a full history, complete a thorough physical examination, and begin treatment where appropriate. Follow-up sessions are structured around your individual needs and never rushed.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your condition, its severity, and how long it has been present. Some patients see significant improvement in 4-6 sessions; others with more complex or longstanding conditions benefit from a longer programme. We will always give you a clear and honest expectation from the outset.
What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended as your physiotherapist will need to assess your posture, movement, and the affected area. For lower limb conditions, shorts are ideal. For shoulder or neck conditions, a vest or loose top works well.
I have had physiotherapy before and it did not help. Can you still help me?
Yes. We regularly see patients who have had previous treatment without lasting results. Our physiotherapists are experienced in managing complex and unresolved cases, bringing fresh clinical perspective to identify what may have been missed. We have a strong track record of achieving progress where earlier treatment has not.
What conditions do your physiotherapists treat?
We treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including back and neck pain, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, and joint and muscle pain affecting the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, and wrist. If you are unsure whether physiotherapy is right for your condition, contact us and we will advise.
What does a physiotherapy treatment session involve?
Treatment is tailored to your condition and may include manual therapy, joint mobilisation, soft tissue release, dry needling, targeted exercise prescription, and postural or movement re-education. Your physiotherapist will explain every element of your treatment and why it is being used.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Some techniques can cause mild discomfort during or after treatment, but this is normal and typically short-lived. Your physiotherapist will always work within your comfort levels and explain what to expect before any treatment is applied.
Can physiotherapy help with long-term or chronic pain?
Yes. Physiotherapy plays an important role in the management of chronic pain, not just by addressing physical dysfunction but by improving movement confidence, breaking unhelpful pain patterns, and equipping you with the tools to self-manage effectively. Our approach looks at the whole picture, not just the area that hurts.
Will I be given exercises to do at home?
In most cases, yes. A tailored home exercise programme is a key part of your recovery and helps consolidate the progress made in clinic between sessions. Your physiotherapist will ensure exercises are appropriate for your level and clearly explained, and will progress them as you improve.
Do you offer physiotherapy for post-surgical rehabilitation?
Yes. We provide structured rehabilitation programmes following a wide range of orthopaedic procedures including joint replacements, ligament reconstructions, and spinal surgery. We work closely with your surgical team where needed to ensure your recovery is safe, progressive, and on track.
Where are your physiotherapy clinics located?
We offer physiotherapy across three central London locations — Mayfair, Marylebone, and South Kensington. All three sites deliver the same standard of private, senior-led care. Book at the location most convenient for you.
